TBVP 2016 Honoree Sgt Earl Miller U.S. Army

An avid Ham Radio Operator Mr. Miller, a civilian, was listening to his HAM Radio early on Sunday afternoon December 7, 1941. He was one of the first persons to hear of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Mr. Miller's HAM Radio operators' knowledge would set him on a path to become a U.S. Army Tech Sergeant Radioman in the 25th Tank Battalion 14th Armor Division. He served with Sherman's tanks during the Battle of the Bulge from December 1944 thru January 1945 in France and Germany.

During this time Tech Sgt. Miller was awarded both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

In April 1945 his unit arrived at the infamous Dachau Concentration Camp where he witnessed firsthand the atrocities of Nazi Germany and met with liberated prisoners. He visited the manufacturing and test facilities for the German jet engine program located near the concentration camp.

In 1955 Mr. Miller, his wife and two young daughters moved to Tampa and he became an electrical engineer with The Tampa Electric Company (TECO) for 38 years, retiring in 1984.

Education and service has always been a hallmark in Earl's life, he is presently learning sign language, yet another adventure in his long and meaningful life.
